The history of swamp soccer and the all-time champions
The father of swamp soccer is considered to be Esa Romppainen, a skier from Vuokatti Ski Team’s Hyrynsalmi reinforcement, who found his summer training boost from the swamp. The battle for dominance in swamp soccer has spanned three decades, and today around 150 teams compete for the World Championship title in the sport.
The idea of swamp soccer was tossed around, and the success potential of this wacky sport began to be considered. The idea gained momentum thanks to open-minded municipal decision-makers, and the first tournament was organized through volunteer efforts in the summer of 1998. The first Finnish Championships featured 13 teams.
The excitement for the competition soared, and the following year the number of participating teams had quadrupled. In the last tournament of the millennium, the European Championship titles were contested by 57 teams.
The World Championships have been held since the year 2000
Since 2000, swamp soccer has been played as World Championships, and year by year the number of participants has grown. The number of teams has stabilized at around 150, competing in several different divisions. In addition to domestic participants, teams from England, the Netherlands, Sweden, Russia, Scotland, Iceland, and Germany have also taken part.
During the event weekend, thousands of visitors, including spectators, gather in the area. This speaks to the unique atmosphere surrounding the event, which fascinates even those unfamiliar with the sport.
